Be Careful what you say…

‘I’ll Worry About That Later’, is that a phrase that enters your vocabulary?  It’s time to change…

Given whatever we focus our attention on, we attract more of, the statement ‘I’ll Worry About That Later’, is not something I’d want to be focusing any of my attention on.

Generally, people utter this as a fly away comment when they haven’t finished doing something or need to make a decision but haven’t got time.

‘Worry’ about that later… guess what you do when you finally get around to thinking or doing something about it?  The trouble is, in between times you also ‘worry’:

  • you worry about when you might complete the task
  • you worry that you might not get it done on time
  • you worry what others might think
  • you worry you can’t afford it
  • you worry you’ll never get to the end of it

That’s a heck of a lot of worry time.  Imagine if you re-channeled all that worry time into something productive?  You’d probably have the task completed by now….

Let your worries go, just drop them.  Imagine your worries are a small piece of paper.  Now imagine holding it out in front of you, what do you have to do to ‘drop’ that piece of paper – that’s right – you just have a ‘let it go’ and it falls effortlessly to the ground.

It’s the same with letting go of worries.  It then leaves room for you to become constructive and creative.  You’re more likely to find answers.

Worry-less, Achieve-more.

The hardest concept for most people is to let go of their expectation; and

    • Letting go of your expectation of the outcome.  Being attached is another way of putting it
  • Everything will come once you give up your need for attachment to the outcome
  • At the same time, shift your thoughts towards what you want and away from what you don’t want
  • Be still and allow yourself to meditate every day asking for help and protection from within
  • Stay focused on your goals
  • Move away (distance yourself) from those that do not support you in the way you need to be supported
  • Make choices based on your intuition (your gut feelings) that support and set you up to head towards the life of your dreams

Dr Wayne Dyer – The Power of Intention

I am a big fan of Dr Wayne Dyer.  His latest video which relates to his book The Power of Intention really resonates with me.  I love what he says ‘when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change’ – so very true.

We can only change the way we ‘see’ things.  I was also listening to Gay and Katie Hendricks recently and they said it in a slightly different way ‘I commit to seeing you as my alley’

Overcoming Procrastination Achievement and Goal Setting

One of the most critical factors to attaining the life of your dreams is in the Art of Noticing. You see it is the art of noticing that will lead you to clarity.

The art of noticing is really invaluable in three ways:

  1. To guide you in your decision-making
  2. To highlight the valuable lessons that lie in decisions that didn’t quite ‘fit’ with your desired outcomes
  3. It highlights where you need to make changes in your life

People make choices and decisions every day, sometimes they are great decisions and they lead them towards their desired outcome, however sometimes the decision doesn’t quite ‘fit’ with their future goal. Where people get stuck is that they fail to ‘notice’, stop and ask themselves if a particular decision, thought, conversation or action was useful.

It is in the art of noticing that the greatest lessons can be learned. So how do you use this powerful simple tool in your life?

Here’s some action step you may want to being with.

Think back over the last couple of years of your life. Note down any instances or decisions that:

  • Did not leave you with a sense of joy
  • Did not lead you towards your desired outcome
  • Seem to be a repeat pattern in your life

What did you notice about them at the time, or did you just move on with your life?  Now that you are looking at the situation from afar, is there anything you notice which, if you altered your thoughts or actions, could change the way you act in the future? Or could change the way you ‘view’ or ‘see’ what happened?

The secret that many have not yet discovered is – you cannot ‘change’ anyone else, you can only ‘change’ how you ‘see’ them, or how you ‘see’ a situation.

Relationship Advice and Date Nights

Is Your Relationship On Track?

I was reminded recently when my lovely friend came to stay, how easy it is to let every day life get in the way.

We were talking about relationships and how it’s so easy to let life get in the way and become too busy or not bothered with making an effort.

Relationships are much like the plants in your garden.  Think about a person who becomes interested in vegetable gardening for a minute.  They initially become really interested in the whole process, they prepare the soil, adding fertilizer and mulch.  Then they are ready to purchase the seedlings and plant them.  So they think about what vegetables they love the most, purchase them and then the planting begins.

For a while they’re really keen, they remember to water the plants every day.  Then they get really busy, or the garden seems a long way away from the kitchen and so begins the decline of the veggie patch.

It could be that winter sets in and they still have veggies in the garden that grow in the winter time but getting out there seems ‘too hard’, ‘too cold’, ‘too busy to bother’.

So what happens to the garden?

  1. The weeds begin to grow wild
  2. The plants suffer and wilt with slack of water
  3. Those that do survive don’t produce healthy vibrant results

Your relationship is much the same.  In order to keep the relationship healthy, vibrant and alive, you need to nurture it.

However, if we think about the garden again for a moment, if, when you first planted your seeds, you wouldn’t then go back 3 days later and dig up the soil to see what the seed was doing, you’d tend to the soil, nurture it and let nature take it’s course, otherwise the seeds wouldn’t grow!

So I see two key factors coming from the above information:

  1. In order for your relationship to remain vibrant and alive, you need to nurture it, spend time – schedule date nights in your calendar.
  2. However, don’t obsess so much in the beginning that you stifle the relationship’s natural flow.

I saw an episode of Oprah recently where a couple had become distant and were not intimate in their marriage any longer.  Oprah had a therapist on the show who said they needed to schedule some date nights in their diary.  These date nights needed to include intimacy.

Some members of the audience raised the question as to whether this was too orchestrated.  The therapist’s response was – our lives are very full, we get busy and it’s so easy to put things off until another day.  What the date night does, if you schedule it in your diary and you know it’s coming up, you begin to think about it, plan it, expect it and look forward to it.

So if you’re in a relationship, you might like to regularly schedule some date night.  You might also want to think about some ‘away nights’, where you go and stay away from home together.  It’s so easy to let life intervene when you’re in your own environment, there’s something about being away that has you focus solely on the present.

Goals and Procrastination

How to Avoid Procrastination

I’ve been fascinated (and some might say obsessed) for some time with achievement – or lack of it.

The questions I have been asking myself is:

  • Why are there some things that people just don’t or ‘won’t’ do, even thought they express that they want to?
  • What has people achieve in certain areas of their lives, but they simply remain stuck in others?
  • Do people really ‘procrastinate’ or is it something else.

Whenever I stumble upon a question that I know there’s a simple answer to, I ponder on it, looking for a metaphor that explains it.

What I found astounded me.  I took my own life as an example, using the situation of exercise – or in my case the lack of it.

I asked myself the question, why is it that you can achieve all sorts of things in your life, but this one area remains:

  1. My statement was “I get frustrated because I know exercise is good for me and I need to do it but  ‘I don’t want to exercise’
  2. ‘I don’t want to exercise’ – is this true?
  3. The answers was ‘no’ – which surprised me.  No, actually I ‘do want to exercise’, I really do, but I’m just not doing it!
  4. Ok, then I asked ‘what happens when I believe the thought ‘I don’t want to exercise’?
  5. The answers was simple, ‘I don’t do it’, and I feel as if it’s ‘hard’.
  6. So I actually changed my line of questioning at this point, to:  ‘Is it true that exercise is ‘hard”?
  7. Again the answer to was ‘no’, and it was at that point that I realized the only reason it was ‘hard’ was because I was layering other people’s expectation and rules about what exercise is, or should be, on top of the model I had for exercise.

Let me explain further.  I had always thought that it would be far easier for me to walk with someone else – a walking buddy.  However whenever I did that, I felt as if I had to ‘keep up’.  For those of you that know me, you’ll know that I’m very short, and my legs didn’t miss out of the short quota!  So that means when I walk with others I usually end up sprinting while they ‘walk’.

I realized that if I were to look at my own model of exercise, I would see that exercise doesn’t necessarily mean a marathon run, or that it even has a time limit imposed.  It is merely movement with the goal of feeling vibrant.

I began to see the benefits of movement in my own way and also saw that this gives me fantastic ‘thinking time’, which I love.

So….. since the revelation (my own) that I ‘do want to exercise’.  And layering my own expectations on top, rather that others, I’ve been walking and loving it.

Avoid Procrastination

I don’t actually believe there is such a thing as procrastination.  I also don’t believe there is such a thing as ‘not enough time’ or ‘too lazy’.  Everyone has plenty of time, it’s about chunking your goals into manageable pieces.  My new book (launching in a few weeks) uses a fabulous process for setting and achieving goals that is so simple, anyone can use it.

Initially I hesitated publishing the book because again I layered what I thought ‘other people’s expectations were’ on top, worrying that the process wasn’t ‘big enough’.  But here’s the reality, it’s simplicity is the key to the magic in the process, so watch this space for the book.

Here’s a metaphor to explain categories and tags using the grocery store:

  • A ‘category’ is like an aisle sign post in the supermarket.  So down aisle number 3 you might find breakfast cereals.  Breakfast cereals would be a ‘category’
  • A ‘tag’ is the particular type of cereal.  For example ‘breakfast oats’ or ‘muesli’.  Or it could be the ‘brand’ of cereal.

So the category is the product type, and the tag is the flavor or brand.

Achievement

Achievement of anything is far more likely to happen if you follow a set process and stick to it.

Below I’ll outline how this diagram works, and beneath that, you’ll see how I discovered it.

Completion

First you must complete something.  Completion is first in the cycle.  In order to complete something you must stick to it.  Stop multi-tasking and for a moment, focus on the task at hand, keep focusing on it until it’s complete and then, and only then, move on.

Achievement

Once you see completion, you’ll gain a sense of achievement.  It’s very unlikely that sense of achievement will happen until you have experienced completion.  Don’t confuse completion with success – success is a different thing altogether.  Completion could be that you completed the task but it still doesn’t meet your expectations, you can still feel a sense of achievement with that, it could be a great learning experience.

Prosperity

Once you have completed and achieved, prosperity will follow.  Prosperity comes in many formats.  Prosperity could mean money, however it comes in many other formats as well, see the following examples:

  • You complete a long overdue budget, track where your money is going, trim any unnecessary expenses and live within your means.  You feel a sense of achievement, and bingo prosperity follows
  • You complete your SMART goal sheet for weight loss, you gain a sense of achievement with the steps you take along the way, you gain a sense of prosperity having:
    • more energy
    • more sense of self esteem
    • new clothes
  • You complete your part in the project you’re involved in
    • You gain a sense of great achievement for yourself and your team
    • The project is a success and you receive a promotion (prosperity)

Now comes the clever part.  The metaphor CAP.  Here’s why I think CAP is a great little word to use:

  1. When a person graduates from university they go to a ‘capping’ ceremony (that’s what happens in this country anyway).  We say ‘they’re getting capped’ – completion, achievement, prosperity (prosperity could be the prospect of a well paid job because they have the qualification to back that up)
  2. Businesses put a ‘cap’ on expenses in a project.  That CAP is there because it stops the project going over budget.  The CAP also sees that the project reaches completion which leads to a sense of achievement and of course prosperity.
  3. A cap is used on top of a bottle to stop the liquid from escaping.  Imagine that the bottle contains a fizzy drink or soda, if you shook the bottle, pressure would build up and if you removed the cap you would be showered with drink.  The cap prevents this from happening.  The cap acts as a containment for the liquid, so it remains in the bottle until you’re ready to drink it, you drink it (achievement), then you feel better (prosperity)
  4. A cap is something we wear on top of our head.  It lives ‘at the top’, and it also serves many functions:
  • It keeps us warm
  • It keeps the sun off our face
  • It could contain unruly  hair (like mine)
  • It’s ‘cool’ – that probably only applies to someone half my age!
  • It’s generally the last item of clothing you put on, it ‘completes’ the outfit

I am part of a group which I founded over a year ago, we’re called ‘Fortunes 4 Doing It’.  Our purpose is to assist each other and ourselves to achieve prosperity.  Prosperity comes in many forms, not just money.

Anyway, Peter, the sole male in the group said a very wise thing:

“Fiona, you need to think more like a man”, he said.  “Women are always saying that men can’t multi-task – which is probably true.  There’s a positive to that, it means we do one thing, and we do it until it’s completed and then we move on to the next”.  I was listening and a smile was appearing on my face, I could see what he was getting at.

“So”, he said “we all know you’re a multi-tasking Queen” (or words to that effect), “but the trouble is, that doesn’t have you complete anything, so for the next week, you need to stay focused, think like a man and only focus on one thing at a time”.

I thought this was really good advice, because whilst I know that multi-tasking can be a really great asset, my tendency is to have so many things on the go at once that I don’t actually finish them.

So this week I’ve kept that mantra to mind ‘think like a man’.  That’s probably what had me waking up in the middle of the night (thanks Peter), which is why this blog post is at 5am in the morning, because I suddenly had an idea of how I could use that thought and turn it into a metaphor for myself, and of course you, the reader.

I was reminded the other day when the group met that I use metaphors a lot in my work, but more than that I use them for myself.  I love making the process of learning and discovery easy and by linking a word or a situation to something, I’m far more likely to remember it.

Excuses Begone

Excuses Begone!: How to Change Lifelong, Self-defeating Thinking HabitsI just listened to the audio version of Dr Wayne Dyer’s recent book Excuses Begone – brilliant!

His teachings are fabulous.  Every time I listen to him or read something he’s written I become inspired and unstoppable.  He has a way of getting to the core of an issue and blowing all of my obstacles out of the water.

I love his teaching style, it’s simple to follow yet goes far beyond ‘basic’.  He would have to be one of the greatest teachers I’ve ever come across in the field of human development/spiritual growth.
